The 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro and 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max will feature upgraded displays, which will do away with the bang-screen notch used in current iPhone models.
The perforated screen will allow Apple to provide a larger display area while also allowing room for a front-facing camera, a design that Android smartphones have used for years. If Apple does transition to this design, the Face ID hardware could move below the display.
The other two non-Pro versions of the iPhone 14 series, the 6.1-inch iPhone 14 and the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max, will continue to use the bang-screen notch, and Apple will limit the punch design to the more expensive iPhone Pro. Apple will cancel the 5.4-inch "iPhone mini" in 2022 and instead offer four iPhone 14 series lineups of 6.1 and 6.7 inches.
Apple will also procure LTPO OLED displays for the iPhone 14 Pro model to achieve a 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate, which is already used in this year's iPhone 13 Pro model, The Elec said. Samsung supplied the OLED panel that Apple used for the iPhone 13 Pro model, but Apple may source some displays from LG Display in 2022, IT House has learned.
The iPhone 14 series has been rumored to have a perforated display in the past, and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has repeatedly said that some iPhone 14 Pro models may use the technology.
