On August 23, it was reported that AppleInsider, a technology media, released a blog post yesterday (August 22), sharing the camera specifications of Apple's iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro series for a total of 4 models, and revealed that Apple will introduce a new format for photo buttons and JPEG-XL pictures.
iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus camera specifications
The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus continue to use a dual-camera scheme on the back, with a wide-angle main camera offering 1-2x zoom and an ultra-wide-angle secondary camera offering 0.5x zoom.
As many models and renders show, the cameras will now be stacked vertically instead of diagonally.
Sources report that Apple will not adjust the main camera specifications of the standard and Plus versions of the iPhone until 2026, so the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are 48 million pixels, equipped with an f/1.6 aperture and a 2x telephoto function.
However, Apple has improved the ultra-wide camera of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, and the aperture will change from f/2.4 to a larger f/2.2, which means more light enters the sensor, improving low-light shooting.
Another noteworthy thing is that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will support macro shooting for the first time.
iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models have seen big changes in terms of cameras, with three cameras still on the back – a wide-angle camera, an ultra-wide-angle camera, and a telephoto camera.
The main sensor also remains the same. Still 48 megapixels, f/1.78 aperture, and 12 megapixel telephoto photos with 2x optical quality at 1.22 microns.
Both Pro models come with a 5x telephoto camera, and the telephoto lens is also 12 megapixels with an aperture of f/2.8.
Next up is the ultra-wide-angle lens, which Apple has upgraded to 48 megapixels and has the same pixel grading as the main camera. The pixel size is 0.7 microns when shooting at full resolution and 1.4 microns when shooting with quad pixel pixels.
According to the news, Apple may support shooting 48-megapixel ProRaw photos. ProRaw has the largest amount of image data and offers more post-processing options.
Other camera changes in the iPhone 16 series
Apple has introduced a new JPEG-XL image format for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro series, alongside the existing HEIF, JPEG, HEIF Max, ProRaw and ProRAW Max.
The news says that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max support 3K video at 120 frames per second and Dolby Vision.
All models are equipped with a photo button
According to the report, all 16 models of the iPhone 16, iPhone 4 Pro series are equipped with a camera button, which is located on the lower right side, so when held horizontally, the camera bump will be at the top, and the user's index finger can be easily placed above the new button.
According to the report, the photo button is capacitive, which means you need to use your finger to activate it to avoid accidentally triggering the situation in your pocket.
The button is designed specifically for the Camera app, but users can choose their own Camera app (both official and third-party).
