Motorola Signature 27 Launches at $1,599.99: A 12,000-Nit Screen, 200MP Periscope, and a 7,000mAh Battery

Motorola is done pretending it doesn't want a seat at the flagship table.

The company unveiled the Signature 27 on Wednesday, its first no-compromises, ultra-premium candybar phone for the US market in years. It costs $1,599.99 , and Motorola isn't shy about who it's gunning for: the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra and the iPhone 18 Pro Max .

Pre-orders open November 19 , with retail sales starting November 26 through Motorola.com, Amazon, and Best Buy. The phone is sold unlocked, with no carrier partnerships announced at launch.

The Screen Is Absurdly Bright

The Signature 27's headline spec is its 6.8-inch "Extreme AMOLED Duo" display —a tandem OLED panel that stacks two light-emitting layers to hit a claimed peak brightness of 12,000 nits .

For context: the Galaxy S26 Ultra peaks at around 2,600 nits , and the Pixel 11 Pro XL tops out near 3,600 nits . Motorola's number is roughly 5x brighter than Samsung's flagship on paper.

One caveat: that 12,000-nit figure reflects a 1% average-pixel-level test condition , not sustained full-screen output. It's a spec-sheet flex, not a promise that the whole panel stays at 12,000 nits while you're watching YouTube. Still, the tandem OLED tech is also claimed to be 34% more power-efficient and last 121% longer than traditional OLED panels.

The display runs at 120Hz , and the front glass is Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 .

Cameras: 200MP Periscope and a "First-of-Its-Kind" Action Sensor

The 200MP periscope is the attention-grabber, but the optical zoom is only 3x —Motorola leans on AI-assisted "Super Zoom Pro" to reach 100x hybrid zoom .

The more interesting addition is the EVS (Event-Based Vision) action sensor , which Motorola calls the first of its kind on a smartphone. It works with an "Action Shot" mode to reduce blur on fast-moving subjects.

Performance: Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6

The Signature 27 is among the first phones to ship with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 —the top-tier "Extreme" variant of the 8 Elite Gen 6 family, built on a 2nm process with CPU clocks reaching 5GHz .

In the US, it comes with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage (UFS 4.1).

Cooling comes from Motorola's ArcticMesh system , now with a 40% larger vapor chamber and diamond-infused thermal gel . Diamond conducts heat extremely well, and Motorola claims the system delivers roughly 40% better thermal performance than the previous generation.

Battery: 7,000mAh in a 7.99mm Body

Battery SpecDetails
Capacity7,000mAh silicon-carbon
Wired charging90W
Wireless charging50W (Motorola charger) / ~15W on third-party pads
Qi2 magnets❌ Not included

A 7,000mAh cell is substantially larger than the 5,000mAh in the Galaxy S26 Ultra, and Motorola managed to fit it into a body that's just 7.99mm thick and 227g .

The trade-off: no built-in Qi2 magnets , which is a genuine bummer for anyone who likes magnetic accessories.

Design and Durability

The Signature 27 comes in two Pantone colors: Coal Smoke and Capulet Olive , the latter with a textile-inspired "Tactical Weave" finish. The frame is aerospace-grade aluminum , with ceramic and glass-ceramic elements in the build.

Durability is flagship-grade: IP68 and IP69 ratings for dust and water resistance.

Audio is tuned by Bang & Olufsen , with dedicated sound modes for music, movies, gaming, and podcasts.

Software: Android 17, Seven Years of Updates, and GrapheneOS

The Signature 27 ships with Android 17 and carries a promise of seven years of OS and security updates —matching Samsung and Google's commitments.

It's also the first mainstream US phone to officially support GrapheneOS , the privacy-focused Android fork.

The Price Problem

At $1,599.99, the Signature 27 lands at the same price as the 512GB Galaxy S26 Ultra (which Samsung recently raised to $1,599). Samsung still sells a cheaper 256GB S26 Ultra for $1,399 , though.

Motorola is also throwing in a bundle for direct buyers: a moto watch ultra (a $349.99 value) and a free year of Motocare , but only through Motorola.com—not Amazon or Best Buy.

The Bottom Line

The Signature 27 is Motorola's most ambitious US phone in years, and the hardware backs up the talk: a 12,000-nit tandem OLED , a 200MP periscope , the latest Snapdragon Extreme chip , a 7,000mAh battery , and seven years of updates . The missing Qi2 magnets and the 3x-only optical zoom are real compromises, and $1,599 is a lot to ask for a brand that hasn't competed at this tier in the US recently.

But if Motorola wanted to be taken seriously as a premium Android player, this is how you do it. The Signature 27 is officially on the clock.
